What Is EyePrintPRO?
EyePrintPRO is an impression-based, custom scleral device designed from a three-dimensional representation of an individual eye’s surface. Instead of beginning only with a library of diagnostic lens shapes, the process uses an ocular surface impression to help define the back surface of the device.
Dr. Edward Boshnick may consider EyePrintPRO for selected patients whose corneal or scleral shape, ocular surface disease, prior surgery, scarring, or localized elevations make conventional fitting unusually complex. It is one option within custom scleral lens care, not an automatic upgrade for every patient.
The device vaults the cornea and rests on tissue over the sclera. Before application, its bowl is filled with sterile, preservative-free saline, creating a fluid reservoir between the device and the cornea. The physical fit, optical correction, ocular surface response, handling, and follow-up all remain important after manufacturing.
How the EyePrintPRO Process Works
- Examination and goals: Dr. Boshnick reviews the diagnosis, prior surgery, current lenses, ocular surface health, visual symptoms, medications, and daily needs.
- Determine whether impression-based design is appropriate: Many eyes can be managed with other custom scleral lens methods. The choice should respond to a measurable fitting or optical problem.
- Capture the ocular surface: A trained practitioner obtains an impression of the corneal and scleral surface using the approved EyePrint process.
- Digitize and design: The impression is scanned to create a three-dimensional model used to design the back surface. Optical power and other features are prescribed separately for the patient’s needs.
- Evaluate the manufactured device: Dr. Boshnick checks clearance, landing, centration, edge relationship, vision, comfort, and tissue response on the eye.
- Train and follow up: Patients learn application, removal, filling, cleaning, and disinfection. Follow-up evaluates settling, real-world wear, ocular health, and whether refinement is needed.
An impression can provide detailed shape information, but it does not remove the need for clinical evaluation or follow-up.
What Does the Ocular Impression Appointment Involve?
The EyePrint manufacturer describes the impression capture itself as a process that takes minutes. A trained practitioner places impression material in a tray designed for the ocular surface, captures the corneal and scleral contours, and sends the completed impression for scanning and device design.
The impression step is only one part of care. The complete process also includes examination, prescription measurements, manufacturing, on-eye evaluation, handling instruction, and follow-up. Eye Freedom does not promise a total timeline or number of visits before Dr. Boshnick evaluates the eye and the reason impression-based design is being considered.
Who May Be Evaluated for EyePrintPRO?
An EyePrintPRO evaluation may be reasonable when the eye presents a complex surface or when an existing lens cannot achieve an acceptable relationship with the sclera. Examples may include:
- highly irregular or asymmetric corneal and scleral shape;
- keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, or corneal ectasia;
- corneal scarring or a history of corneal transplant;
- post-LASIK, post-RK, or other post-surgical irregularity;
- severe ocular surface disease, including selected cases involving Sjogren syndrome, graft-versus-host disease, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, or neurotrophic keratitis;
- localized conjunctival elevations, surgical anatomy, or other obstacles to stable lens landing; or
- persistent problems with lens stability, localized pressure, edge alignment, or wearing tolerance despite prior specialty fitting.
This list does not establish candidacy. Some patients obtain an appropriate result with a standard custom scleral design, while others may need a different specialty lens or medical treatment of the underlying condition.
How EyePrintPRO Differs From Standard Scleral Lens Fitting
Both conventional custom scleral lenses and EyePrintPRO are individualized medical devices. The main difference is how the back-surface geometry is established.

EyePrintPRO primarily addresses customization of the physical device and its relationship to the ocular surface. Residual blur, glare, halos, or ghosting may involve tear-film quality, lens position, prescription, or higher-order aberrations. Selected cases may require a separate wavefront-guided optical evaluation.
What to Expect During Evaluation and Follow-Up
Bring current and previous contact lenses, lens parameters, corneal imaging, surgical records, and a list of eye drops or medications when available. Dr. Boshnick first determines what is limiting vision or comfort and whether the problem is primarily medical, fitting-related, optical, or a combination.
If EyePrintPRO is selected, the impression and manufacturing steps are followed by on-eye evaluation, handling instruction, and scheduled follow-up. New pain, pronounced redness, discharge, sudden light sensitivity, or an abrupt reduction in vision should be reported promptly rather than waiting for a routine visit.
